Superorder laurasiatheria

This is the result of recent genetic and molecular research, which is rewriting the story of mammalian classification. The various members of the Ungulatomorpha are now placed in two very different lineages of placental mammals: Afrotheria (paenungulates) and Laurasiatheria (true ungulates).

The ruminant models (sheep, cattle, and llama) are from the order Cetartiodactyla, which is placed in the superorder Laurasiatheria, as are carnivores like cats and dogs. Laurasiatheria shares a common ancestor with Euarchontoglires. Two other superorders (Afrotheria and Xenarthra) occupy a more basal position. The superorder Laurasiatheria is comprised of eight orders: Cetacea Artiodactyla Perissodactyla Carnivora Pholidota Chiroptera Soricomorpha Erinaceomorpha Cetacea and Artiodactyla are sister taxa that are sometimes combined into a clade called Cetartiodactyla.

Cambaytheres (Cambaytherium, Nakusia and Kalitherium) are recently discovered early Eocene placental mammals from the Indo-Pakistan region. They have been assigned to either Perissodactyla (the clade including horses, tapirs and rhinos, which is a member of the superorder Laurasiatheria) or Anthracobunidae, an obscure family that has been variously considered artiodactyls or perissodactyls In the late 20th century, based on initial genetic research, bats were grouped with primates and flying lemurs in the superorder Archonta. 9. More recent genetic analysis — not yet universally accepted — places bats in the superorder Laurasiatheria, with a diverse bunch of other placental mammals including whales, dogs and giraffes.

Laurasiatheria is comprised of eight orders: Cetacea Artiodactyla Perissodactyla Canivora Pholidota Chiroptera Soricomorpha Erinaceomorpha In some phylogenies (including Murphy et al. 2001) Soricomorpha and Erinaceomorpha are combined into a single group called Eulipotyphla. Laurasiatheria, the last superorder to arise, includes several orders with epitheliochorial placentation.

Laurasiatheria was discovered on the basis of the similar gene sequences shared by the mammals belonging to it; no anatomical features have yet been found that unite the group. Laurasiatheria is a clade usually discussed without a Linnaean rank , but has been assigned the rank of cohort or magnorder , and superorder.

The even-toed ungulates are ungulates whose weight is borne about equally by the third and fourth toes, rather than mostly or entirely by the third as in perissodactyls.

These comprise whales, camels, pigs, ruminants, horses and pangolins. In contrast, nearly all carnivores have endotheliochorial placentation, whilst bats have endotheliochorial or hemochorial placentas. Exafroplacentalia places Xenarthra as a sister group to the Boreoeutheria (comprising Laurasiatheria and Euarchontoglires), thus making Afrotheria a primitive group of placental mammals (the group name roughly means "those which are not African placentals").
